Treasure Island Art Guild and the Suntan Art Center present a painting workshop by Linda Hugues.

Linda’s evocative paintings of Europe start with her method of designing the painting and her simplified approach to color. Through demonstrations, class critiques, and handouts she’ll give you tools to create compelling landscapes.

Demonstrations will be in oil or gouache. Acrylic painters also welcome. Some painting experience is suggested.

Design is the foundation of powerful paintings. Linda shows students how to create composition sketches using the concepts of value, proportions, differences, and tried-and-true layouts. Your sketch will become a useful guide for decisions as you paint.

Next Linda approaches color in a way that makes it easier to create vivid, harmonious color schemes. “I use a limited palette which simplifies my color choices makes for sophisticated combinations of neutrals and bright hues.”

Even with this planning, Linda stays open to her intuition, “Painting is a dance between what I have planned and what I sense as I’m working. I never know exactly how a painting will turn out,” she says, “but my process makes my artwork more successful and painting much more enjoyable.”

Students will paint a new painting each day, working from their own photographs. Each session will include a lecture, a demo, handouts, painting time, and student critique. Expect to start three paintings and possibly finish one.
